Keyhole repair costs more (the ports, the camera and the tacking devices are the reason) and buys less pain and a faster return to work.

Which hernia, and how big
Inguinal, umbilical, incisional and hiatal hernias are different operations. A large or long-standing defect needs a bigger mesh and more time to place it.

One side or both, and whether it has been repaired before
A bilateral repair is one anaesthetic but two dissections. A recurrent hernia means working through scar tissue, which is slower and more demanding.

A shared ward, a twin-sharing room or a private suite: the largest single swing in most estimates, and the one thing on this list you choose rather than are assigned.
