What Changes a Laparotomy Estimate

  • What is found, and what has to be done

    The incision is the same; the operation through it is not. Resecting a tumour, repairing a perforation and controlling a bleed are different lengths of surgery with different consumables.

  • Emergency or planned

    A planned laparotomy is worked up beforehand and booked onto a list. An emergency one carries out-of-hours theatre staffing and, often, a period in intensive care afterwards.

  • Length of stay and critical care

    Two to five days is typical. A case that needs an ICU bed, ventilation or parenteral nutrition moves the total considerably, and that is the largest single variable here.
