Sleeve Gastrectomy Treatment: Appetite, Reflux & Follow-Up

Dr. Tagore Grandhi MBBS, MS, FRCS (UK), DLS (France)
    Sleeve Gastrectomy Treatment

If you are considering weight-loss surgery, you may have several questions before deciding. Will your appetite reduce? Can reflux become worse? What happens years after surgery? Understanding these concerns can help you prepare for a safer and more informed treatment journey. Sleeve gastrectomy treatment involves removing a large portion of the stomach and creating a smaller, tube-shaped stomach. The smaller stomach limits how much food you can eat at one time and can also influence hunger-related hormones. However, surgery is only one part of long-term weight management. At Lux Hospitals, patients considering sleeve gastrectomy treatment can discuss their health history, weight-related conditions, expectations and concerns with a bariatric care team before choosing a suitable approach.

    Considering sleeve surgery?
Call Talk to a Bariatric Specialist. Talk to a Bariatric Specialist.

    What Happens During Sleeve Gastrectomy?

During sleeve gastrectomy treatment, the surgeon removes a substantial portion of the stomach. The remaining stomach forms a narrow tube, or sleeve. The procedure does not reroute the intestines. Unlike gastric bypass, it does not bypass part of the intestine to reduce nutrient absorption. Its effects mainly come from reducing stomach capacity and changing appetite-related signals.

Why does a smaller stomach affect eating?

After sleeve gastrectomy treatment, you may:

    • Feel full after smaller meals.
    • Need to eat more slowly.
    • Experience changes in hunger
    • Need smaller portion sizes.
    • Follow a structured eating plan during recovery.

The goal is not simply to eat less. The long-term goal is to develop sustainable eating habits that support weight management.

How Can Sleeve Gastrectomy Affect Appetite?

A common question about sleeve gastrectomy is whether hunger disappears completely. The answer is no. Appetite can change, but people can still experience hunger after surgery. Sleeve surgery removes part of the stomach that produces ghrelin, a hormone associated with hunger, so that some patients may experience reduced hunger after the procedure.

    Worried About Reflux?
Call Get Your Options Reviewed. Get Your Options Reviewed.

    What should you expect?

Your appetite may change during different stages of recovery. Early after surgery, the focus is usually on letting the stomach heal while gradually progressing from liquids to pureed, soft, and regular foods, as directed by your surgical team.

    Remember:

    • Reduced hunger does not mean no hunger.
    • Emotional eating can still occur.
    • High-calorie foods can affect weight-loss results.
    • Portion control remains important.
    • Nutrition follow-up can help you adapt.

Can Sleeve Gastrectomy Cause or Worsen Reflux?

Reflux is an important concern to discuss before choosing sleeve gastrectomy treatment.

Some people may develop gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) after sleeve surgery, while those who already have reflux may experience worsening symptoms.

    Symptoms may include:

    • Heartburn
    • Acid coming back into the mouth.
    • Burning discomfort in the chest
    • Regurgitation
    • Difficulty tolerating certain foods

Why should you discuss reflux before surgery?

If you already experience frequent heartburn or have been diagnosed with GERD, tell your bariatric surgeon before sleeve gastrectomy treatment. Your medical history, symptoms and overall health can influence which bariatric procedure is appropriate. In some situations, we may consider another procedure based on the individual’s condition. Do not ignore persistent reflux after surgery. Your doctor may recommend evaluation and appropriate treatment rather than assuming it is a normal part of recovery.

    What Does Long-Term Follow-Up Involve?

Many patients focus on the operation but underestimate the importance of follow-up after sleeve gastrectomy treatment. Long-term care helps your healthcare team monitor weight loss, nutrition, lifestyle changes and possible complications. After surgery, you may need lifelong healthy eating, physical activity, vitamin supplementation, and medical monitoring.

    What may be monitored?

    Your follow-up may include:

    • Weight and body-composition changes
    • Eating patterns
    • Vitamin and mineral status
    • Blood sugar and other metabolic conditions
    • Reflux or digestive symptoms
    • Physical activity
    • Medication requirements
    • Emotional and behavioural adjustment

Regular follow-up can also help identify problems early.

What Questions Should You Ask Before Surgery?

Before choosing sleeve gastrectomy treatment, prepare questions for your bariatric surgeon rather than focusing only on expected weight loss.

    Ask about your suitability.

Discuss your BMI, existing medical conditions, previous weight-loss attempts and overall surgical risk.

    Ask about appetite

Find out how hunger may change and what eating habits you will need to develop after surgery.

    Ask about reflux

If you have heartburn or GERD, ask whether sleeve surgery is appropriate and whether you need further evaluation.

    Ask about long-term care.

Understand how often you will need medical reviews, nutritional monitoring and lifestyle support.

    Ask about weight regain

Weight loss may slow, and some people can regain weight over time. Lifestyle factors, metabolic changes and other factors can contribute. If this happens, your healthcare team can assess the situation and discuss appropriate options.

Is Sleeve Gastrectomy a Permanent Solution?

Sleeve gastrectomy treatment is a major surgical procedure, not a quick fix for obesity. The physical changes from surgery are intended to be long-lasting, but maintaining weight loss requires continued lifestyle management. Regular activity, balanced nutrition, portion awareness and follow-up care remain important. Some patients may not lose as much weight as expected, while others may regain weight. This does not automatically mean that surgery has failed. A bariatric team can assess eating patterns, lifestyle factors, medical conditions and other possible causes.

    Conclusion

Choosing sleeve gastrectomy treatment requires more than understanding how much weight you may lose. Appetite changes, reflux, nutrition, lifestyle habits and long-term follow-up can all influence your experience after surgery. If you are considering surgery, discuss your medical history, expectations and concerns with a qualified bariatric specialist. At Lux Hospitals, an individualised assessment can help you understand whether sleeve gastrectomy is appropriate for your health goals.
